The oxygen Scientific Expertise Consortium, partner in the GOOD program
The United Nations has proclaimed the United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) to mobilize stakeholders around the world around a common framework that puts science at the service of countries in their implementation of Sustainable Development Goal #14 on the ocean.
On the occasion of the last World Ocean Day, June 8, 2021, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) announced the programs and contributions endorsed as the first set of actions of the Decade.
The GOOD project, Global Ocean Oxygen Decade, was selected as one of these official programs. The Scientific Expertise Consortium Oxygen of the ODATIS Ocean Cluster is associated as a partner to GOOD. It will contribute to the development of oxygen databases that meet the FAIR principles and Ocean Best Practices.
Oxygen dissolved in seawater supports the largest ecosystems on the planet. It affects the cycles of carbon, nitrogen and other key elements. Oxygen depletion in the oceans leading to deoxygenation in some ocean regions is alarming and occurring at a rapid rate, mainly due to global warming (greenhouse gases and pollution by nutrients and organic waste, especially in coastal waters).
