Sentinel-6 : 1st results
We reported here the announcement of the launch of the "Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich" mission on November 21, 2020 and underlined the importance of continuing the long-term recording of sea surface height measurements and thus better understand the role of the ocean in global warming.
Three weeks after this launch, the first altimeter waveforms are recorded winth an excellent measurement accuracy. The Poseidon-4 altimeter simultaneously provides high-resolution measurements along the track, according to the SAR mode, and low-resolution measurements according to the LRM mode, similar to those of Jason-3. The 2 satellites Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich and Jason-3 will follow each other in orbit, 30 seconds apart, for a tandem phase for the next 12 months during which the independent measurements of these 2 satellites will be compared. Sentinel-6 will then become the new reference altimeter series.
